About Us

Brisbane Queer Film Festival (BQFF) is the largest festival celebrating queer cinema in Queensland and the third largest queer film festival in Australia.

Proudly sponsored by Brisbane Powerhouse and Volkswagen and supported by the Pacific Film and Television Commission, BQFF exclusively show-cases cinema by, about and for the queer community. The films selected for BQFF rarely receive a mainstream theatrical or television release making BQFF an important exhibitor of shorts, features and documentaries from all over the globe. The festival also creates an environment for the community to come together in a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender safe space to engage in a cinematic experience in which diversity is celebrated

Established in 2000, BQFF is a highlight of Brisbane’s cultural program and audiences continue to grow at a rate of more than 20 percent each year. Housed in Brisbane Powerhouse, one of Australia’s most iconic arts centres, BQFF creates a hub for the community to celebrate all things celluloid. With a week of screenings, forums and discussions BQFF is committed to the growth of cinema culture in Queensland.

BQFF actively encourages Queensland filmmakers to submit their work to the festival with the aim of assisting the development of original voices from the state. QPIX, Queensland’s screen resource organisation, supports this development by providing an annual prize of $1000 worth of filmmaking facilities

BQFF is programmed by Festival Director Sarah Neal, a producer at Brisbane Powerhouse. Sarah has over ten years of experience in the film industry in a variety of roles and has recently completed a Masters in Screenwriting.
