Volkswagen Opening Night Party With Scissor Sisters' Tour DJ Sammy Jo

Music

Get ready to party!  Scissor Sisters’ DJ Sammy Jo will get you moving with his unique blend of house, electro and dark disco.

If you were lucky enough to attend the Scissor Sisters’ only Australian sideshow out of Splendour in the Grass in Sydney last July, you would have had the pleasure of being eased in to the main attraction by their official tour DJ, Sammy Jo.

Having crisscrossed the globe with the notoriously flamboyant American band since 2004, Sammy Jo has entertained crowds far-and-wide, from warehouse parties in Antwerp to the V Festival mainstage in front of 60,000 people.

Sammy Jo first met Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears at the Click + Drag cyberfetish parties, and was invited by the singer to join the band on tour. It wasn’t long before he was asked to join as the official Scissor Sisters DJ.  When he’s not touring with the Scissor Sisters, he’s spinning the decks in New York City.

Don’t miss the biggest night of the festival!

Avant Que J'Oublie (Before I Forget)

Drama

From acclaimed writer/actor/director Jacques Nolot comes this emotionally raw story of a 58-year-old man with HIV contemplating his illness, life and past loves.

Jacques Nolot (Wild Reeds, The Witnesses) plays Pierre, a writer and former gigolo.  At 58, Pierre’s hustler days are gone. Instead he is on the other end of the sex trade, plying youth with cash, with a casualness that hides neither guilt nor shame.

HIV positive for over two decades, Pierre navigates his daily life with apparent ease.  But behind his laissez-faire attitude and dark, wry humour hides a man struggling with his past and mortality.

With fierce intellect and underlying wit, Jacques Nolot delivers the third installment of his trilogy (following L'Arriere Pays and Porn Theatre/Glowing Eyes) on gay life.

Katzenball (Feline Masquerade)

Documentary

"My father warned me about men and booze, but he never mentioned women and cocaine." Tallulah Bankhead

This thoughtful and engaging documentary brings the last 80 years of lesbian history to life.

Chronicling the relationships of women who love women, the social pressures to conform, the quest for identity, and secret meeting places of lesbians in Switzerland, the stories of five women of different generations bring a blend of the personal and the historical to this compelling film.

There’s the cosmopolitan Johanna Berends, photographer-chronicler Liva Tresch, fashion designer Ursula Rodel, committed feminist Heidi Oberli and current-day youth Samira Zingaro.

This fascinating collage of anecdotes, historical events, film and TV footage, takes its audience on a journey through time, offering a fascinating look at the "other side" of modern cultural history.

Naissance Des Pieuvres (Water Lilies)

Drama/Coming-of-Age

One of the standout discoveries of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival was this beautifully crafted drama – a fiercely perceptive account of ing doubts, crushes and the offhanded cruelty of adolescent girls.

It's summer in the suburbs, and the local swimming pool is the centre of attention. Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15.  Pint-sized tom-boy Marie doesn’t make the synchronised swim team but lingers.  Captivated by star performer, Floriane, a tall, blonde boy magnet, Marie neglects her friendship with plump Anne to get close to her new-found crush.

Sensitive and sometimes witty, this film is a provocative portrait of how hard it is to be a teen girl in the exploratory routes to womanhood.

You Belong To Me

Thriller

Who is stalking whom is the central question in this thriller.

Recently dumped Jeffrey cannot help himself when he discovers his untrustworthy ex’s address and finds out there is a vacancy in his building. Jeffrey charms the landlady, Gladys into letting him have the place, all the better to keep tabs on his would-be boyfriend.

But what begins as a tale of a spurned lover soon becomes something more sinister as Jeffrey realises that his landlady is not the harmless eccentric he first thought her to be.

The slowing building suspense makes for a tense and intelligent nail-biter.

Pusinky (Dolls)

Comedy/Drama

“Our film is about the search for love; there are lots of ‘open’ scenes and some sex scenes as well. But these are things and attitudes that belong to the age category of the protagonists of the film: teenagers… the film is actually about the confrontation of someone’s previous naïve view of the world with the real observation of life.” Karin Babinská

Three 18-year-old school friends, Iska, Vendula and Karolína, decide to embark on a road trip to Holland following their graduation, with Iska’s younger brother, Votja, inadvertently tagging along for the ride.

Each with their own distinct personalities and goals, the girls’ summer is a rights-of-passage, with Votja as the witness to the adventures, dramas and sexual escapades of these girls on the cusp of adulthood.

Sonja

Drama/Coming-of-Age

A refreshingly honest portrait about adolescent self-discovery, sexual identity, and falling in love with your best friend.

It's the summer holidays and 16-year-old Sonja has outgrown everything. Her boyfriend is boring, her mother aggravates her and she seems crammed into their little flat. As friends swap sex stories in bus shelters and boys flock round her best friend, Sonja begins to realise the true object of her affection.

What makes this tender coming-of-age story special are the strong performances by the young cast under the direction of first-time filmmaker and former actress Liimatainen.

Black White + Gray

Documentary

Legendary curator Sam Wagstaff, famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and punk rock’s “poet laureate” Patti Smith depict New York’s grand collision of art, fashion, music and clublife in the 70s and 80s.

Yale-educated and born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Sam Wagstaff was a world away from the mean streets of Queens that spawned Robert Mapplethorpe.  But the pair collided in the heady sex-drenched days of 70s New York - a place where the rich and fabulous danced and drugged their way through the rancid heart of the city.

Black White and Gray is a thoughtful, acid-tinged account of an extraordinary couple whose collective work continues to influence present-day art and culture.  Narrated by Joan Juliet Buck, the documentary features a who's who of the 1970s New York art world including Dominick Dunne, Patti Smith and Philippe Garner.

Vivere

Drama

Three women on the run, saving each other, saving themselves… a sophisticated, engrossing film that unfolds from three different perspectives.

On Christmas Eve Francesca's little sister, Antonietta, runs away to Rotterdam with her rock star boyfriend. On a hunt to find her, Francesca picks up Gerlinde, a suicidal lovesick woman. Now she has two lives to save. With the paths of three lost souls criss-crossing in Rotterdam, it soon is hard to tell who is saving whom.

Vivere is by the creator of the highly acclaimed Everything Will Be Fine and Unveiled.  This film combines a beautiful soundtrack, skilled cinematography and performances of real depth, to deliver a film that aches with melancholy but is uplifting in surprising ways.

A Jihad For Love

Documentary

Jihad: struggle; to strive in the path of God

Courageous, controversial and ground-breaking, A Jihad for Love is the first feature-length film about the taboo topic of homosexuality and Islam.

In many nations with a Muslim majority, laws based on Qur’anic interpretations are enforced by authorities to monitor, entrap, imprison, torture and even execute homosexuals.

Filmed in secret and under great risk over five years, in 12 countries and nine languages, A Jihad for Love journeys through the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and beyond.  Devout Muslims who are lesbian, gay or transgender share their personal and often frightening jihads for love.

In South Africa, the imam Muhsin Hendricks faces condemnation when he publicly comes out of the closet. In Egypt, where homosexuality is outlawed, a young man named Mazen has to flee after being imprisoned and tortured following the well-publicised 2001 raid on Cairo’s “Queen Boat.”

The film works to bridge religious divides and to portray the humanity of its characters. No matter what you believe or where you come from, this film will remind you that we are all engaged in the same struggle – for love.

Breakfast With Scot

Comedy

This all-round comedy crowd pleaser explores the strength in blended families.

Eric McNally (Golden Globe-nominee Tom Cavanagh from TV’s Ed) is an ex-hockey pro turned sportscaster hiding the true nature of his relationship with lawyer boyfriend Sam (Ben Shenkman from Law and Order). Secrets aside, life’s good — until the guys suddenly become guardians of Sam’s eccentric nephew, Scot.

Scot is not like most 11 year olds, his love of flamboyant clothes and a preference for musicals above sport is a challenge to a macho, sports-loving household. With the death of his mother, Scot finds a temporary home with his uncle Sam but his effeminate antics provoke difficulties wherever he goes.

Noah Bernett turns in a terrific performance as Scot, and his refusal to compromise will raise a cheer from anyone who has had to fight for acceptance.

Otto; Or, Up With Dead People

Horror

“Once upon a time, in the not so distant future, there unlived a zombie named Otto”. So begins queer pioneer Bruce LaBruce's latest work, which despite this familiar opening sentiment, is certainly no fairy tale.

Otto is a gay zombie facing an existential crisis. Struggling to adapt to the undead way of life, he wanders the streets of Berlin with nowhere to go. That is until he meets Medea Yarn, an experimental filmmaker out to change the world with her new 'political porno zombie movie'.

As this queer dead uprising takes place, LaBruce breaks all the rules, combining horror, pornography, silent film and documentary styles in his diabolical concoction of sex, gore and social commentary. Not since Romero's army of corpses descended on a shopping mall in Pittsburgh has the zombie film been so innovative and politically charged. Only this time, they're gay!

Red Without Blue

Documentary

An artistic and groundbreaking portrayal of gender, identity and the indestructible bond of twinship.

Super 8 footage and snapshots show identical twins Mark and Alex leading a normal childhood. But adolescence reveals there was much more going on behind the picture-perfect façade of the Farley family, as they deal with coming out, sexual abuse, divorce, drug use and a failed joint suicide attempt.

After being separated for two years in their teens due to their self-destructive actions, Alex reveals news that would further rock the family: he no longer wants to be Alex but now identifies as Clair.

Red Without Blue, whose title refers to the colours the twins wore as children to distinguish between the two, explores the Farley family’s painful past and shifting present. The film provides a heartbreaking, but ultimately optimistic look at the tribulations of growing up gay and transgender as we witness the rebirth of this courageous family.

A Four Letter Word

Comedy

A fresh, honest and hilarious examination of sex, dating and relationship issues.

“Let the manhunt begin!” It’s another night, and time for Luke to find a man (or three). But when our party boy enters his favourite gay bar flanked by his sidekicks, little does he realise that he’s about to meet his match – the rich, macho Stephen.

Although he’s smitten with the sexy new man on the scene, Luke is horrified at the thought of – gulp – monogamy. He is chastised by Zeke, his gay crusader co-worker at a Chelsea sex store, and is forced to face the realities of his lifestyle.

Luke considers giving the ‘m’ word a chance, he attends a sexual compulsives meeting where he discovers he is not the only nympho in NYC. And while Stephen seems to have it all, it soon turns out that his cash doesn’t flow from a trust fund…

With plenty of eye candy, a supporting cast with their own issues, and plenty of zippy one-liners, A Four Letter Word is not-to-be-missed.

“One of the most entertaining films of the year.” Mark James, PlanetOut.com

Viva

High Camp Comedy

A cult freak-out retro 70s spectacle about a bored housewife who gets sucked into the sexual revolution.

Abandoned by her perfect Ken-doll husband, Barbi is dragged into trouble by her girlfriend, who spouts women's lib as she gets Barbi to discard her bra and go out on the town. Barbi learns a lot more than she wanted to about nudist camps, the hippie scene, orgies, bisexuality, drugs and bohemia.

Highly stylized and drawing upon classic exploitation cinema, Viva is saturated with colour and exquisitely depicts the wild 70s, down to the campy and self-assured performances, big lighting and overabundance of négligée.  Naked people dancing, alcoholic swingers, stylish sex scenes, a sea of polyester, glitzy show numbers, white horses, blondes in the bathtub, gay hairdressers and psychedelic animation - Viva has it all!
